Deadly accident on A31 near Wietmarschen: wrong-way driver collides with van

A fatal accident occurred on the A31 near Wietmarschen on Monday evening.

According to initial findings, a 74-year-old man drove his car in the wrong direction on the A31 towards the Netherlands shortly before 7 p.m. Between the Anschlussstelle Wietmarschen and the Anschlussstelle Lohne/Wietmarschen, he collided head-on with a van driven by a 58-year-old man.

The 74-year-old man died at the scene of the accident.

The 58-year-old van driver was seriously injured and was taken to a hospital. The A31 was completely closed in the direction of the Netherlands for several hours. The police are investigating the exact cause of the accident.
