What is the DWP Christmas bonus?
The DWP Christmas bonus is a one-off tax-free sum paid by the UK government to eligible individuals and households in the United Kingdom.
The Christmas bonus was first introduced in 1972. Since then, the bonus has increased in value several times and was set at £10 in 1980. This increased to £10.75 in 2000 and was then doubled to £21.20 in 2003. In 2010, the bonus was set at £25, which is the amount it is set at today.
Who is eligible?
To be eligible for the DWP Christmas bonus, you must have been in receipt of one of the following benefits on a qualifying date. The qualifying date is the first Monday in December.

- Jobseeker's Allowance
- Employment and Support Allowance
- Universal Credit
- State Pension
- Disability Living Allowance
- Personal Independence Payment
- Constant Attendance Allowance
- Severe Disablement Allowance
You will not be eligible for the Christmas bonus if you are in receipt of the following benefits:
- Housing Benefit
- Child Benefit
- Council Tax Reduction
Can you get the Christmas bonus if you are on Universal Credit?
Yes, you can get the Christmas bonus if you are on Universal Credit. However, you must have been in receipt of Universal Credit on the qualifying date, which is the first Monday in December.
The Christmas bonus will be paid automatically to those who are eligible. You do not need to make a claim.
The Christmas bonus is paid in addition to your regular benefit payment.
