M5 warning issued for five months of delays
Serious delays expected on M5 due to emergency bridge repairs at Avonmouth
National Highways has issued a warning that drivers could face months of disruption as emergency repairs are set to take place on a major motorway bridge. A five-month closure of the M5 has been put in place after a crack was found in a bridge over the River Avon near Avonmouth. The closure, between junction 16 and 17 of the M5, is expected to cause severe delays on one of the busiest sections of motorway in the UK.
Traffic chaos expected as 110,000 drivers use key route every day
The closure, which is set to begin on 30th January and is expected to last until June, has been met with dismay by drivers and hauliers. Approximately 110,000 vehicles use the M5 near Avonmouth every day and the closure is expected to cause long tailbacks and delays on the motorway network and surrounding roads.
Contractors working day and night to fix M5 bridge
National Highways is advising drivers to plan ahead and allow plenty of extra time for their journeys. The organisation said that contractors will be working day and night to repair the bridge and reopen the motorway as quickly as possible.
