Rotary Club of Montego Bay raises over $10k for World Polio Day

The Rotary Club of Montego Bay Central raised over $10,000 at their annual World Polio Day fundraiser on October 24. The money raised will go towards the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), a public-private partnership led by Rotary International to eradicate polio worldwide.

Polio is a highly infectious disease that can cause paralysis and even death. It is spread through contact with the feces of an infected person. In 1988, there were an estimated 350,000 cases of polio in the world. Thanks to the GPEI, that number has been reduced to just a few hundred cases per year.

The Rotary Club of Montego Bay Central has been supporting the GPEI for many years. The club has raised over $100,000 for the effort since 2010. The club's fundraising efforts are part of a larger effort by Rotary International to raise $50 million for the GPEI by 2020.
