Former host of popular crime show dies at 83
Nidetzky passed away on Saturday (December 17, 2022) in Vienna
Austrian television legend Peter Nidetzky, who hosted the popular crime show "Aktenzeichen XY... ungelöst" (Case File XY... Unsolved) for many years, has died at the age of 83.
Nidetzky, who was born in Vienna in 1938, began his career as a journalist and actor before joining the ORF (Austrian Broadcasting Corporation) in 1968.
He became the host of "Aktenzeichen XY... ungelöst" in 1981 and quickly became one of the most popular faces on Austrian television.
The show, which featured unsolved crimes and appealed for viewers' help in solving them, was a huge success and helped to catch numerous criminals.
Nidetzky hosted the show for over 30 years, until his retirement in 2014.
He was also a successful author and wrote several books about crime and criminal investigations.
Nidetzky's death has been met with sadness by many in Austria.
President Alexander Van der Bellen said in a statement that Nidetzky was "a great journalist and a great entertainer who will be greatly missed."
ORF Director General Roland Weißmann said that Nidetzky was "a legend of Austrian television and a role model for many journalists.
He will always be remembered for his commitment to solving crimes and his dedication to the public.
Nidetzky is survived by his wife and two children.
