Product Recall: Kirkland Signature Butter Recalled Due to Potential Listeria Contamination

What Happened?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced the recall of Kirkland Signature Butter due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination. Specifically, 48-ounce packages of unsalted butter, with lot codes 50315061, 50315062, 50315063, and 50315064, are affected by this recall. These products were distributed to Costco stores nationwide and were sold between September 15, 2023, and October 10, 2023.

What is Listeria?

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause serious infections, including listeriosis. Listeriosis is a rare but potentially fatal infection that can affect pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. In severe cases, listeriosis can spread to the bloodstream or central nervous system, causing meningitis or encephalitis. Pregnant women who contract listeriosis may experience miscarriage, stillbirth, or premature delivery.

What Should Consumers Do?

Consumers who have purchased the affected Kirkland Signature Butter should not consume it and should return it to their nearest Costco store for a full refund. Costco has removed the recalled butter from its shelves and is working with the FDA to investigate the source of the contamination. How to Prevent Listeria Infection

Listeriosis can be prevented by taking the following precautions:

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after handling food.
