Scholz at DJV Anniversary: "Guidance in Difficult Times"
German Chancellor Attends Anniversary Celebration of German Journalists' Association
Berlin (ots) - German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has praised the role of journalism in a democracy at the 120th anniversary celebration of the German Journalists' Association (DJV). In his speech, Scholz emphasized the importance of reliable information and critical reporting, especially in times of crisis.
Freedom of the Press Under Scrutiny
"Journalism is a cornerstone of our society," Scholz said. "It provides orientation in a difficult time, enables participation, and holds those in power accountable." However, he also acknowledged that freedom of the press is under increasing pressure worldwide and that journalists are often subject to threats and violence.
DJV Calls for Stronger Protection for Journalists
DJV Chairman Frank Überall called for more effective protection of journalists in Germany and abroad. "Journalists must be able to work freely and without fear of reprisals," Überall said. He also urged the government to take concrete measures to combat hate speech and disinformation online.
Scholz Pledges Government Support
Scholz pledged the government's support in ensuring the safety of journalists and protecting freedom of the press. He announced that the government would provide additional funding for media literacy programs and support initiatives to combat disinformation.
DJV Honors Outstanding Journalists
The DJV anniversary celebration also included the presentation of the Theodor Wolff Prize, one of the most prestigious awards for journalism in Germany. This year's prize was awarded to investigative journalist Frederik Obermaier for his work on the "Panama Papers" and the "Cum-Ex" scandal.
A Look Back at 120 Years of DJV
The DJV was founded in 1899 as the "Reichsverband der Deutschen Presse" (Reich Association of the German Press). It has since played a key role in representing the interests of journalists in Germany and protecting freedom of the press.
