SPD will hold Federal Party Conference at the beginning of June: Laschet chooses NRW CDU state executive
Federal party conference to be held virtually or as a hybrid event
The SPD wants to hold its federal party conference in early June. "We are planning for the beginning of June," confirmed SPD general secretary Lars Klingbeil on Wednesday of the German Press Agency in Berlin. The meeting was originally planned for June 25th to 27th in Berlin, but had to be postponed due to the corona pandemic. It is still unclear whether the conference will take place virtually or as a hybrid event. "We will decide on the exact format in the coming weeks," said Klingbeil. The CDU, on the other hand, is holding its state party conference in North Rhine-Westphalia on Saturday. NRW Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst will then be elected state chairman. He was the only candidate for the post. Wüst took over the post of Prime Minister at the end of October from Armin Laschet, who had become Chancellor candidate at the time. Laschet, who failed with his ambitions to become Chancellor, will not run for a new term as state chairman.
NRW CDU state executive elected
The NRW CDU also elected its new state executive on Saturday. The former federal environment minister Svenja Schulze, the former head of the NRW state chancellery, Nathanael Liminski, and the parliamentary group leader Bodo Löttgen will become deputy state chairmen. The CDU faction leader in the state parliament, Thorsten Schick, was elected treasurer. The former state chairman Laschet was elected honorary chairman of the North Rhine-Westphalian CDU by a large majority with 98 percent of the votes.
The CDU state party conference is also expected to deal with the recent failures in the NRW CDU. In particular, the corruption scandal surrounding the former state parliament president, Carina Gödecke (CDU), will be discussed. Gödecke is accused of accepting money for political decisions. She denies the allegations.
