Spirit Airlines Crew Hit, Bullets Enter Cabin as Plane Sprayed With Gunfire
Passengers and crew members reported being hit by bullet fragments
The aircraft was approaching Philadelphia airport when shots were fired
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — After a Spirit Airlines flight was fired upon as it approached Philadelphia International Airport, bullets reportedly entered the aircraft's cabin, injuring both passengers and crew members.
Authorities report that the aircraft, which had just departed from Atlantic City, N.J., was about 30 miles from its destination when a barrage of gunfire struck the plane. According to preliminary reports, the shots were fired from the ground, possibly from a firearm discharged from close range.
As the aircraft continued its approach, numerous passengers and crew members described hearing loud bangs and feeling a rapid succession of impacts, leading them to believe the plane was being fired upon. Upon landing, passengers and crew reported injuries consistent with being hit by bullet fragments, including cuts, bruises, and other minor injuries.
An investigation is underway, and the FBI has taken over the case. No arrests have been made as of publication. Authorities are reviewing security camera footage from the airport and surrounding areas and interviewing witnesses to determine the source of the gunfire.
In a statement, Spirit Airlines expressed its concern over the incident and confirmed that the flight had landed safely. The airline is cooperating with authorities and providing support to affected passengers and crew members.
The incident has raised concerns over airport security and the potential for similar attacks in the future. Authorities are working to determine whether the shooting was a random act of violence or if it was targeted at the aircraft or its passengers.
