Winterberg: Handball legend survives "major challenge"
German handball legend Stefan Kretzschmar is currently facing one of the biggest challenges of his life. The former world champion and Olympic medalist has been diagnosed with cancer. In an interview with the “Bild” newspaper, the 49-year-old talks about his fight against the disease.
The diagnosis was a shock
“It was like being hit by a train,” Kretzschmar says about the moment he received the diagnosis. “I didn’t know what to do or think. It was a complete shock.” The former left-winger underwent surgery to remove the tumor, and is now undergoing chemotherapy.
The fight against cancer
Kretzschmar is determined to fight cancer. “I’m not going to give up,” he says. “I’m going to do everything I can to beat this.” The handball legend is receiving support from his family, friends, and fans. “I’m so grateful for all the support I’m getting,” he says. “It gives me the strength to keep fighting.”
The future
Kretzschmar is unsure of what the future holds, but he is optimistic. “I’m taking it one day at a time,” he says. “I’m just trying to focus on getting better.” The handball legend is hoping to return to the sport he loves one day. “I’m not ready to give up on handball yet,” he says. “I’m going to keep fighting, and I’m going to come back stronger than ever.”
